Take a leisurely stroll around the lush Palheiro Gardens, set in the hills to the east of Funchal. Breathe in the sweet aromas in the camellia avenues that date back to the 18th century and be dazzled by myriad varieties of tropical and sub-tropical plants such as hibiscus and bougainvillea. Pause for a drink at the quaint Tea House of the Quinta and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere.
Head to the Monte Palace Tropical Garden and come face-to-face with flora from all over the world. Wander round the central lake as swans glide across the water and peacocks roam the paths with you, and look down to admire the 15th century Hispano-Moorish decorative tiles.
