Pass through bustling Hersonissos on your way to Elounda and pause in this charming resort to photograph the beautiful coastal views. From nearby Plaka – set in the lovely Mirabello Bay – you can gaze across to the famous island, Spinalonga. Known as the ‘Island of Tears’ and surrounded by high walls, the now-abandoned village there was Europe’s last leper colony.
Sip a soft drink and try a tasty provincial snack at a local taverna before driving to the popular resort of Agios Nikolaos for one final photo stop. The scene in the heart of town, where Lake Voulismeni is surrounded by colourful cafés and boutiques, is one worth remembering.
