Hop in a 4x4 and head off for an island adventure. Pausing to admire landmarks along the way – including the Aposelemi Dam and the Roman aqueduct at Lyttos – you’ll soon reach the quaint village of Kastamonitsa, where you can join the residents for raki and olive oil tasting.

Rumble off road and follow the Minoan trail high into the mountains. A local shepherd will offer a warm welcome and invite you to feed the goats and taste some homemade cheese.

Before you head back to Heraklion via the village of Krasi, home to the famous 2,000-year-old plane tree, you’ll call at a traditional taverna for lunch. Here you can sit back, relax and tuck into typical Greek dishes accompanied by free-flowing wine.
