The Chi Lin Nunnery is a large temple complex of elegant wooden architecture, treasured Buddhist relics and soul-soothing lotus ponds. The complex was established in 1934 and renovated in the Tang dynasty style in 1990. During your visit, you’ll see a series of temple halls, some of which contain gold, clay and wooden statues.
Next door to the Chi Lin Nunnery is the Nan Lian Garden, nestled amongst a myriad of high-rise apartments. Its scenic garden is meticulously landscaped and provides a moment of tranquility away from the hectic pace of Hong Kong.
The Kowloon Walled City Park of Hong Kong was designed into a south Yangtze River garden in the features of early Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) with well maintained distinctive flavours and architectures of the old Walled City. During the reconstruction, some ancient objects and relics were discovered, which are now well protected and exhibited to the masses.
Mei Ho House was built as part of the Shek Kip Mei Estate to settle more than 50,000 refugees from China displaced by the Shek Kip Mei shantytown fire of 1953. When the rest of the estate was redeveloped to improve living conditions, the Grade II listed building was abandoned in 2005. It reopened in late 2013 as a youth hostel and museum. Currently, the ‘Memories of our Days’ exhibition presents two thematic zones that bring scenes of the grassroots lifestyle in the 1950s and 60s back to life.
