Arctic Foxes and Folklore
Isafjordur, Iceland
moderate
3:00 Hours
Gaze up at the towering backdrop of Mount Kofri as you stroll through tiny Súðavík on the west coast of the shimmering Álftafjörður. Home to just 200 people, the village is divided into two halves: the new town and the now-abandoned old town, which was tragically hit by an avalanche in 1995.
View some of the small timber houses that were reconstructed after the disaster and visit the small church, where you’ll be treated to a performance of traditional Icelandic music. In the old town, take a look at the signs explaining details about the fatal avalanche.
In between the village’s two zones lies the Arctic Fox Centre, a research facility and museum dedicated to the sole native animal of Iceland. They may be cute, but these creatures are hardy! Find out how they survive such harsh winters and take a break to enjoy a hot drink and a typical local pastry.
