Experience Details*
Embark on a captivating journey, by both land and water, and uncover Livorno’s alluring past.
A short bus ride to the city centre, will transport you to Livorno’s ‘New Venice’ district where you can enjoy a guided walking tour through a warren of canals, waterways and bridges. This elegant city was founded in 1577 by Italy’s prominent Medici Family, after Pisa’s harbour silted up. You’ll learn how architect Bernardo Buontalenti created this impregnable pentagon-shaped city, which is surrounded by a canal.
Then it’s ‘all aboard’ your waiting canal boat. After your cruise enjoy a glass of wine and roschetta biscuit (or cappucino with a pastry) at a local bar. As you glide along the city’s Fosso Reale, or Royal Canal, you’ll pass centuries of Livorno’s colourful history, revealed in a host of elegant buildings, churches and fortresses.
Sights include the New Venice district, Old Fortress, Four Moors statue, Lighthouse, Dutch Church and the Central Market – which dates to the late 19th-century and is considered Europe’s most beautiful indoor market.
