Tobago has a surprisingly large number of historic forts, a legacy of its turbulent past at the hands of rival colonists. One of the best-preserved is Fort King George, built by the British in the 1770s and now housing a small museum.
The views of the capital, Scarborough, and over the sea are stunning – as are those over Great Courland Bay from Fort James, another British-built fort in Plymouth.
