Stone and Water Trek
Port
Vigo, Spain
Activity Level
high
Duration
4:45 Hours
Venture off the beaten path and trek along the Route of Stone and Water to discover an enchanting Galician forest.
The starting point of your trek is the peaceful 12th-century Monastery of Armenteira (a Cistercian order). Explore on your own, perhaps taking photos or buying local products, handcrafted by the resident nuns. Then it’s time to set off, walking in the footsteps of thousands of locals who’ve traditionally followed the trail on Easter Monday. Surrounded by nature, hear the whisper of the wind in the trees and the soothing rush of the stream over its rocky bed. Pass countless old watermills, jumps and channels, created to direct the water to drive millstones that once ground flour. The trail brings you to the Aldealabrega, a meadow covered with native trees. Admire the stone statues representing traditional Galician trades. Round it all off with a delicious homemade picnic served in the middle of the forest.
