Travel to Ypres – a town demolished in World War I but now restored to its former grandeur – and visit poignant monuments commemorating those who fell there.
At Tyne Cot Cemetery, pay respect to those who died on the battlefields surrounding Ypres. There are almost 12,000 Commonwealth graves here, most of them unnamed.
Pause for thought at Menin Gate, a memorial bearing the names of 54,896 missing Commonwealth soldiers. Then, explore the In Flanders Fields Museum to gain a true understanding of the lives of the ordinary people who endured the war – not the commanders and strategists, but the soldiers, nurses and children.
Visit St George’s Memorial Church, Ypres and spend some free time exploring the town further, or take a break to buy lunch.
