Reasons to visit Northern Europe & Scandinavia with P&O Cruises
From medieval walled towns to stylish modern cities, tranquil canals to windswept islands, and ancient Viking treasure to cutting-edge contemporary design – get set to discover a vibrant blend of scenery, culture and cuisine.
More time to discover
With overnight stays in Helsinki, Copenhagen, and Stockholm, you’ve plenty of time to discover these captivating cities, just the way you like. Perhaps you’ll enjoy as the locals do? Slow down and have a traditional ‘hygge’ moment (a feeling of comfort and conviviality) in a cosy canal-side café, marvel at cultural masterpieces, reinvigorate yourself with a steaming sauna, or tuck into the foodie scene.
Immersive artwork and architecture
Helsinki is a design lover’s dream: the city boasts some of the finest examples of Art Nouveau architecture, with the central train station and National Theatre being prime examples. Be sure to also visit the Design Museum, a treasure trove of Finnish design.
Delicious cuisine
The region’s food scene has boomed in recent years. When in Oslo, you can’t go wrong with seafood – smoked salmon and tørrfisk (air-dried cod) are good bets. Scandinavian and German influences are evident in Estonian cuisine – sample the local delicacy of kiluvõileib, a sprat sandwich made with traditional black bread, washed down with a local craft beer.
History that spans the ages
The Gotlands Museum in Visby is home to hundreds of fascinating artefacts from the Stone and Bronze Ages, as well as The Spillings Hoard – the world’s greatest Viking silver treasure ever found. Over the centuries, Estonia has been a battleground for Danish, Swedish, Polish and German forces all jostling for supremacy, but today Tallinn is a peaceful yet vibrant modern capital.
"When you fancy a slow day wandering around and sampling delicious coffee, cakes and independent shops, Jægersborggade in Copenhagen is the place – and it won’t look bad on your Instagram either. Favourites include Inge Vincent’s ceramics workshop, craft store Vanishing Point and jewellery designers Ladyfingers. And when you’re just about ready for a snack, stop at the Coffee Collective."
