In January 1942, Japanese forces invaded Rabaul, which was then an Australian colonial outpost on the island of New Britain. Women and children had been evacuated the month before, leaving behind 1,400 men – many of whom were killed or captured. The Japanese quickly established a powerful military base, digging miles of tunnels to shelter from the Allied forces. Visit one of the surviving tunnel systems and the Kokopo War Museum, which houses artefacts from the occupation. You’ll also visit the Bita Paka War Cemetery, which contains the graves of those who lost their lives during the Pacific campaign, and Admiral Yamamoto's Bunker.
