Discover Rabaul's dramatic history on this fascinating tour. During the Second World War, the city was attacked and occupied by Japanese forces – see the submarine base where they first invaded, the underground tunnels built for storage and shelter, and the Japanese Peace Memorial. In 1994, Rabaul was nearly destroyed again – this time by a catastrophic eruption from the nearby Tavurvur and Vulcan volcanoes. Today, activity is closely monitored at the Volcanological Observatory, which offers fantastic views of the ocean, harbour and surrounding volcanoes from its hilltop position. Finish with a visit to the bubbling, steaming waters of Mount Tavurvur's hot springs.
