Croatia's second-largest city is a built around the spectacular Diocletian's Palace. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Centre, it is one of the most impressive Roman ruins in the world, built in the 4th century for the Emperor Diocletian. Wander the charming cobbled streets to the Cellars of the Palace, one of the best-preserved remains from Roman times. Visit the Cathedral of St Dominus, originally built as Diocletian's mausoleum and converted into a Christian church in the 7th century, before continuing past the Temple of Jupiter and Peristyle Square, the central square of the palace. A delicious local restaurant lunch completes the Split experience.
