The charming 16th-century port of Sanary-sur-Mer in the heart of Provence is sure to delight with its colourful facades, shaded walkways, vineyards and 100-year-old olive trees. Stroll through the town to discover its evocative 13th-century defensive tower and church of Notre-Dame de Pitié, where a resident hermit once rang the bells when enemy ships were sighted, and pay a visit to its fashionable boutiques. A scenic trip along coastal roads also takes in nearby Balaguier Bay, another former defensive stronghold. One of its two forts was recaptured from the English by a young Napoleon Bonaparte in 1793.
