1. Take a rip-roaring RIB boat ride

Lysefjord is one of the most scenic of all Norway’s fjords, offering 41km of incredible vistas. The best way to see it? From a RIB boat, of course. On this exhilarating shore excursion, zip past tumbling glacial waterfalls and towering rock formations and see the fjord from a unique angle, pausing to admire the majestic Preikestolen viewing platform. Better known as Pulpit Rock and a location for the filming of Mission: Impossible – Fallout, this popular hiking spot is almost 610m tall. Catch an uninterrupted view of it from the water before speeding back to Stavanger.

2. Set off on a kayak adventure

Hop into a kayak and follow your guide to explore the waterways and islands around picture-perfect Ålesund. Keep your eyes peeled for birds and native marine life and get a good view of Ålesund’s Art Nouveau architecture on your way back to shore. If there’s a better way to view the Norwegian fjords than from the water, we’d love to hear about it.

3. Pedal the North Sea Cycle Route

Hire a bike and cruise along the well-marked path of the North Sea Cycle Route, taking in the sparkling lakes, beautiful beaches and gorgeously green mountains that surround Stavanger. The 33km coastal stretch between two pretty harbours offers ample opportunity to stop for a picnic. It’s not hard to see why this is one of the country’s best-loved bike trails.

4. Get active on a mountain hike

Known as the Huaren Trail, this well-marked hike begins in Olden and winds up to the Huaren viewpoint, which sits at 400m above sea level in the Auflem mountains. At just under 5km, the hike isn’t a long one, but the steady uphill incline will certainly get the blood pumping. The views over Nordfjord and the villages of Olden and Loen below are simply stunning and make the effort worthwhile.

5. Cruise in a helicopter above the fjords

Buckle up for the ride of your life on this unforgettable sky high shore experience. Take off in a helicopter from Ålesund and soar above the stunning Sunnmøre Alps before weaving back down to follow the path of the glassy fjords that cut deep into the verdant countryside. Look out for tiny farms that cling to the craggy mountainside and admire the enchanting Art Nouveau houses of Ålesund from an altogether different vantage point.
