Accessible Leisurely Alta
Alta, Norway
moderate
1:30 Hour
Soak up the sights and peak into Alta’s captivating history, on this leisurely ride around the city.
You’ll visit the Northern Lights Cathedral, which is one of Norway’s most modern sights. Inaugurated in 2013, it was constructed to represent the Aurora Borealis and its unusual spiral-shape is covered in glistening titanium sheets.
You’ll make a photo stop at the city’s oldest site – Alta Church. This white, wooden structure is the only building that survived after the entire city was burnt down by the retreating German army, at the end of WW2.
Riding along the scenic fjord, you’ll also make a photo stop at the historic, reconstructed building of Altagård. Once serving as a school, hospital and army headquarters, it was also burnt down at the end of the war.
Continuing across the picturesque Alta River, you’ll pass the small mountain of Lille Raipas. This UNESCO Site was one of the points used to determine the earth’s shape and size in a 19th-century survey. Then you’ll make a final photo stop at Skaialuft, to see where the world-famous Alta slate is quarried.
