Take a leisurely drive through Alta city centre, and venture into the scenic countryside to Alta Canyon (Sautso in the Sami language), the largest canyon in northern Europe. You’ll pass lush valleys, dramatic mountains and sparkling lakes, along with dwellings of the indigenous Sami people. Then drive, and take an optional walk, across the Alta Power Plant's dam – at 110-metres tall, it’s Norway's highest concrete-arch dam. Soak up amazing views of the canyon on one side and glimmering Lake Virdnejávri on the other. Watch an interesting film about the dam’s construction and stop for photos of Alta Canyon on your return journey.
