What better way to enjoy a workout than by hiking up the side of a volcano?
Relax and soak up the sights on the drive to Lajares, passing by the village of Villaverde and the rolling sand dunes in the distance.
Lace up your walking boots and set off on the trail to the Montaña Colorada volcano. Admire the distinctive colour of the red lapilli gravel that covers the rock and look out for the cheeky Barbary squirrels that might approach you, hoping for a snack. Follow your guide up the side of the volcano and peer down into its deep, extinct crater.
Walk on to the small coastal village of Majanicho, which is found in a pretty, sheltered bay, and visit the famous Calderón Hondo. The gradual climb to the summit takes around 45 minutes and the views are more than worth the effort. Gaze down into the 230-foot-deep extinct crater and behold the vistas taking in the north shore of Fuerteventura and neighbouring Lanzarote.
