The Essence of Ardara
Ardara is situated in the southwest region of Donegal, and its name translates to ‘ring on the hill’, derived from the earthen ring-fort which crowns the hill to the northeast of the town. Its long association with the tweed and knitwear industries dates back to the 1870s, with home-spun and hand-dyed woollen and tweed items being created.
Visit the John Molloy Woollen Mills, where you’ll learn about the tweed industry and see a fascinating demonstration. At a traditional local pub, be entertained by local musicians and enjoy a drink. You will also have the opportunity to see first-hand a demonstration of Irish bread making and have a chance to taste the final piece.
To round off, a little free time will be given for you to perhaps browse the shops or visit the Heritage Centre. It’s well worth dropping into the shop of local character and weaver Eddie Doherty, to admire the array of hand-woven tweed that he produces.
