The Essence of Îles de la Madeleine
Begin at Pied de Vent Cheese Factory, a cottage industry that uses raw milk to produce the tasty Pied de Vent cheese and Tomme des Demoiselles, a semi-hard cow’s milk cheese. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to sample this tasty cheese.
Afterwards, you’ll drive along Chemin Pointe Basse, a road peppered with many examples of traditional local architecture that highlights the Acadian and French origins of many of the Islanders, as well as some New England influences. Arrive at the Fumoir d’Antan economuseum, a typical smokehouse that was once used for three generations to smoke herring and mackerel. Travel back in time and discover the origins of this once important industry.
At Dune du Sud, a stop will be made for you to enjoy some free time to admire the beach and the lovely views, before heading l’Échouerie Lighthouse. which offers a spectacular view over grey cliffs, all of Plaisance Bay and the outline of Entry Island. The lighthouse is the last one built on the Islands, and it has changed little since its construction in 1928.
