About Florence / Pisa

Founded in the 16th century by the Grand Dukes of Tuscany - the Medici Family, Livorno remains a busy port and town. Its centre, which is walkable from the port, has some pretty bars, cafés and chic shops but most of Livornos cruise visitors head straight for Pisa, Florence, or the Tuscan towns of Lucca and Siena.

You may be surprised to find that the recently restored Leaning Tower is just one of many towers in Pisa and that elegant Florence is compact enough to be walkable. With the Arno river running through it, you should be able to keep your bearings fairly easily as you visit the Uffizi Gallery and cross the gold and silver merchants-lined Ponte Vecchio on your way round the many attractions of this startlingly beautiful Renaissance city.

Beautiful Cinque Terre

Discover the breathtaking Cinque Terre, a national park of five dramatically situated villages clinging to the cliffs.

The name Cinque Terre, ‘Five Lands’ was once only accessible by sea and even today there are no proper roads linking the villages you visit on this unique tour.

Travelling on the motorway to Manarola, you’ll capture the delightful coastal landscape along the way, and see the steep rugged and often vertical cliffs down to the sea below.

You’ll arrive into Manarola, where you’ll enjoy the beautiful surroundings before re-boarding the boat and heading to the charming village of Vernazza. Some free time will be given for you to explore this picturesque fishing village at leisure.

Afterwards, you’ll continue by boat to Monterosso, the most famous of the five lands and enjoy a guided introduction of the village. Some free time will be given for you to purchase your own lunch from one of the local cafés or restaurants and to browse the local shops. You’ll rejoin your guide for a short walk to the train station, where you will take the local train to Levanto to meet your coach for the journey back to Livorno.

Essential information

This excursion will operate by boat, train, bus and on foot. Journey time to the Cinque Terre from Livorno is approximately 1½ hours each way. The itinerary may run in reverse order. This tour involves extensive walking, which includes some uneven ground. There are around 100 steps to negotiate throughout the tour. Flat, non-slip walking shoes are essential. Passengers are advised to take sun protection, a bottle of water and Euros for purchases. The boat ride to Monterosso will be replaced by train in the event of poor sea conditions. The train is a local service and is not exclusive to P&O Cruise passengers.

Catch a glimpse into the life of famous Italian tenor, Maestro Andrea Bocelli by spending your day in the heart of the rolling hills of Tuscany in his hometown of Lajatico; Explore the Bocelli family vineyards under the Tuscan sun before indulging in an exquisite wine tasting at the Officine Bocelli, the newest restaurant owned by the Bocelli family.

Leaving the pier, you’ll take a scenic drive through the Tuscan countryside to the Theatro di Silencio where the Maestro holds his annual concert.

Your next stop is the Bocelli family vineyards, where you’ll learn about the wine making process and indulge in a fine wine tasting, accompanied by delicious local cheese meats and bread. Mingle alongside the nephew of Andrea Bocelli, who will explain in depth the history of their family, their wines and their legacy.

Charming Bolgheri and Tuscan Wine

Discover one of Tuscany’s secret treasures, the sleepy village of Bolgheri, for a superior Tuscan wine tasting experience.

Departing from Livorno, drive south along Tuscan coast to the enchanting village of Bolgheri, a medieval hamlet encompassed by the lush green of the impressive Cypress trees, which line the road leading to the village.

The origins of the winery date back to 1500. Since then, it has been the property of the Counts of Gherardesca family. The farm extends around the winery for an area of 130 hectares, 50 of which are covered by vineyards; the rest is made up of areas cultivated with 6,000 olive plants and woodland.

The rich, fertile valleys amongst the vineyards of the Estruscan Coast produce some of the best wines in the Bolgheri region.

Once inside the winery, tantalize your taste buds with a unique Tuscan experience with a tasting of 2 super red Tuscan wines, complemented by olive oil, bread and salami.

Afterwards, you’ll have some free time to explore this charming hilltop village, with its winding streets and enticing shops and local restaurants. Bolgheri is a great place to spend some quality time indulging in personal tastes and unexpected curiosities.

This excursion operates by coach and on foot. The journey to Bolgheri is 1 hour each way. There is a slight incline of around 100 metres from the coach park to the village. There are 3 steps to enter the winery and approximately 30 steps to negotiate to the cellar (optional). Euros are accepted for purchases.

Cinque Terre 2 Stop

Discover 2 of the villages located along the Cinque Terre, a national park of 5 dramatically situated villages clinging to the cliffs.

Upon arrival at La Spezia, you will board a boat to Portovenere. This famously picturesque village is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tour the quaint town with your guide; then, enjoy some free time to explore independently or people-watch along the waterfront.

Next, reboard the ferry and head north up the Ligurian coastline to reach Monterosso. This is perhaps the most famous of the five villages of the Cinque Terre, and also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town is divided into two distinct parts - San Cristoforo Hill, and the old maritime village protected by a rocky spur. This is the only village with a wide beach and a significant seafront. After your guide points out the highlights of Monterosso, enjoy some more free time to continue your exploration.

A local train ride brings you to Levanto, where you will board the coach for the drive back to Livorno.

Essential information

This excursion will operate by coach, ferry, train and on foot. The ferry is not exclusive to P&O Cruises. Lunch is at your own expense. In the event of unfavorable sea conditions, the ferries/boat ride will be replaced by a train. If you wish to swim at Monterosso, wear your swimsuit under your clothing; bring a towel, sunscreen and a hat. Cinque Terre is crowded on holidays, and on Sundays in May. The Cinque Terre is a popular destination; expect crowding in the villages. You will likely encounter a long line while waiting to board the boat; boarding is strictly on a first-come, first-served basis.
