Duration: 4½ hours

A spectacular train journey through wild, rugged and barren mountain plateaus to the Swedish border.

The Ofoten Railway is truly unique. At the time of construction, the 26 mile line was both the coldest and northern-most railway project in the world, painstakingly carved out of the mountains.

Experience this incredible feat of engineering for yourself as you board the train at Narvik, bound for the Swedish border. Admire the breathtaking scenery across the southern cliffs to towering Bjørnfjell, which stands 488 metres above sea level.

Ensure to look out for the Norwegian and Swedish flags painted on the tunnel wall, marking the border between the 2 countries, before leaving the train at Björkliden, where refreshments of tea or coffee and a slice of cake will be served.

Afterwards, enjoy some free time to take a stroll, before meeting your coach for your return journey with a slightly different perspective.

Leisurely Narvik

Activity low

Duration: 1½ hours

Discover Narvik’s fascinating history as you take a relaxing guided drive through the sights of this northerly town.

The town of Narvik has a lovely setting at the tip of the peninsula between the Rombaksfjord and Beisfjord, surrounded by impressive peaks like the ‘Kongsbakktind’ – also known as ‘the sleeping queen’ and towering up to 1575m above the town.

Relax onboard your coach as a panoramic drive introduces you to the sights of the town. As you admire the surrounding scenery, your tour guide will bring Narvik’s past to life. Despite being 140 miles inside the Arctic Circle, the port of Narvik is ice-free all year round, thanks to the North Atlantic Current. This played a central part in the town’s development as a port for the export of iron ore, mined in Kiruna in Sweden, with the Ofoen Railway opened in 1902. Narvik also saw combat in World War II, with fierce fighting destroying the main part of the town.

Essential information

This excursion will operate by coach. Sightseeing on this tour is conducted from the coach, however some photo stops will be made.
