Cephalonia, Greece

<p>The largest of the Ionian islands, Cephalonia offers lush landscapes, stunning beaches, relaxed hospitality and total relaxation.</p>
<p>From the mighty Mount Ainos range, fragrant pine forests tumble down to rugged cliffs, turquoise coves and pretty villages while the interior boasts vineyards producing the island's distinctive Robola wine – enjoy with one of the island’s distinctive specialities, spiced meat pies or fresh seafood.</p>
<p>The bustling capital, Argostolion, is a cosmopolitan base while the villages of Assos and Fiskardo are architectural gems, their charming pastel Venetian buildings spared by the 1953 earthquake that flattened much of the island. As for the beaches, diverse beauties await. Don’t miss Myrtos, with its dramatic cliffs and dazzling white pebbles; Antisamos, with its azure waters and verdant backdrop; and peaceful Xi, complete with red-tinged sand. The Melissani Cave near Sami is another natural wonder. The water glows an otherworldly blue where sunlight pierces its collapsed roof.</p>


Motril (for Granada), Spain

<p>Ringed by mango and avocado groves on Spain’s Costa Tropical, Motril has distinct character and a charm. Lovely old town highlights include the 16th-century Iglesia de la Encarnación and the Moorish-era Castillo de San Cristóbal, plus the panoramic Sanctuary of the Virgin of Cabeza. The Museo Preindustrial de la Caña de Azúcar gives fascinating insight into the region’s sugar-cane heritage while a host of excellent beaches and seaside activities are close to hand.</p>
<p>Motril is also a magical gateway: from here, the road climbs into the Sierra Nevada foothills toward Granada, and the world-famous Alhambra. First impressions of the UNESCO World Heritage Site are dramatic: honeyed walls, intricate Nasrid stucco and gardens, all framed by dramatic peaks. The history and architecture of this Islamic palace fortress complex that dates to 1238 are utterly absorbing. If time permits, wander further into the town to enjoy tapas and a local Cerveza Alhambra in the Plaza Nueva.</p>


Cagliari, Sardinia

<p>Sardinia’s smart capital, Cagliari, is a treasure-trove of architectural and historic attractions complete with a buzzing bar and restaurant scene and access to some of the island’s best-loved beaches.</p>
<p>Perched above the city, the Castello quarter hides Pisan towers and quiet courtyards behind its imposing walls, while beneath the streets lies a Roman amphitheatre carved straight into rock. Seek out the Bonaria sanctuary, a pilgrimage site with a small naval museum tucked inside, then explore the Marina district. Stroll the elegant arcades and swanky shops on Via Roma then hit the colourful backstreets, where you’ll find independent workshops and low-key eateries serving Sardinian classics such as malloreddus and culurgiones.</p>
<p>San Benedetto market is the city's beating heart – wander stalls piled with bottarga, tuna, and pecorino cheese. And don’t miss out on trying Sardinia’s renowned wines: robust red Cannonau or crisp white Vermentino will hit the spot.</p>
<p>Of course, Sardinia’s famous pristine beaches are limpid seas calling. Poetto is the local favourite, a 5-mile-long white-sand arc that meets the dramatic Sella del Diavolo headland. Join locals for a day of relaxation, watersports and authentic eats at the lively bars, beach clubs and eateries.</p>


La Seyne-sur-Mer (for Toulon), France

<p>La Seyne-sur-Mer, on the western edge of Toulon’s bay, offers a slice of Var coast life steeped in naval history – its shipyards once built much of the French fleet. Climb to Fort Balaguier for sweeping views over the bustling harbour or wander the old town’s atmospheric narrow streets. The nearby beaches are excellent: Les Sablettes offers a long sandy stretch backed by pastel villas, or up your daily step count taking the promenade and the coastal path to Mar Vivo and sheltered Fabrégas.</p>
<p>Just across the bay, Toulon Lower Town boasts the lively Cours Lafayette covered market, an interesting naval museum and a historic cathedral and medieval fortifications. The more opulent Upper Town’s sweeping boulevards, piazzas and 19th-century grandeur offer a fine contrast. And don’t miss a cable-car ride up Mont Faron for sweeping coastal views and insight into the city’s liberation by the Allies in 1944 at the Mont Faron Memorial of the Provençal Landings museum.</p>
<p>For adventures further afield, Six-Fours-les-Plages or Bandol are great for beach-lovers with a nose for local wines. The classic Provençal rosé is the perfect match for sunny lunches and local treats such as tapenade, fresh fish and socca (crispy chick-pea pancake).</p>


Catania, Sicily

<p>Sitting in the shadow of Mount Etna, Catania has a brooding beauty that reflects Sicily’s dramatic past and fusion of cultures. From black lava-stone buildings and the baroque cathedral to the majestic Piazza del Duomo and playful elephant fountain, there is much to discover in the centre. However, a surprise lies underground: a Roman theatre and amphitheatre are tucked between unassuming apartment blocks and are well worth a visit.</p>
<p>Don’t miss historic La Pescheria fish, fruit and veg market – the soul of the city and a loud and lively celebration of the sea and other local delicacies (among them, delicious arancini). Or escape the city’s hustle and bustle among the peaceful cloisters of the Benedictine Monastery of San Nicolò l'Arena.</p>
<p>For adventures beyond Catania, hike or jeep up Etna's slopes for close encounters with lava fields and craters, then reward yourself with a visit to one of the many local vineyards that flourish in the fertile volcanic terrain (along with lemons and the island’s famed blood oranges). Along the coast is magnificent Taormina, a picture-perfect cliffside village with artistic inclinations, a Greek amphitheatre and stunning views of the coast and Mount Etna.</p>


La Goulette (for Tunis), Tunisia

<p>La Goulette (Halq al-Wadi) is Tunis's old port town. With its rich maritime heritage and fusion of cultures, it merits exploring on foot. The 16th-century fort, built by the Spanish and later remodelled by the Ottomans, still anchors the seafront, echoing the city’s history of conquest and trade. Wander the grid of colonial-era streets and you'll find faded Italianate balconies (in the 19th century it was known as Little Sicily on account of the influx of Italians) alongside modest mosques and the remnants of a once-thriving Jewish quarter.</p>
<p>For lovers of seafood, La Goulette is nothing short of paradise: the city is the seafood capital of Tunis, with grilled fish, merguez and brik (deep-fried pastries) served simply at bustling terraces. Nearby markets sell the day’s fresh catch along with local spices and woven baskets while artisans still work leather and ceramics in small workshops – a rich source of souvenirs and a chance to practise the art of haggling. Or simply hit one of La Goulette’s nearby beaches to relax and swim.</p>
<p>If you want to rove further afield, lose yourself in the Medina of Tunis or potter among the blue and white houses of pretty cliffside village Sidi Bou Said. The ancient ruins of Carthage are a must for archaeological wonders and the pristine grounds of the North African American Cemetery nearby offer moments of quiet contemplation remembering those who fell in Africa in the Second World War.</p>
