If you’ve never been to a Time Out Market, then firstly: what are you doing? But secondly: you’re in luck!
In the summer of 2024, we opened a brand-new market in the beautiful, sun-drenched city of Barcelona – and you can visit it while on a P&O Cruises holiday to Barcelona, either independently or on a shore experience. The idea of Time Out Markets is that they bring our best restaurant lists to life, so you can try a bit of all our favourites in one place. Our Barcelona Market is a huge, sprawling food and drink hall, completely unlike other food halls you’ve likely been to before. And best of all? It’s just a ten-minute drive from where your P&O Cruises ship will arrive in Barcelona.
You’ve just arrived, and you want to get a feel for Time Out Market Barcelona. And you should: there’s a whole 5,250 square meters of food hall glory to get your head around here. But what a lot of people don’t know is that this isn’t just a food hall – there are four brilliant bars to choose from too. Before you do anything, kick off with a spritz at Monk, a huge outdoor bar on the terrace with sea views over Barcelona’s port. Make sure you perch up on the bar stools at the edge for that magnificent view – it’s your ‘wow, I’m in Barcelona’ moment (and a great spot for a photo).
Now that you’ve got your first drink out the way, let’s get down to business, shall we? With 13 kitchens to check out, you’ve got some tough calls to make. Sample Catalan classics at Casa Guinart, charcuterie at Colmado Múrria (Barcelona’s oldest delicatessen), or paella at Can Ros, which specialises in Spanish rice dishes.
And if you’re sick of Spanish food? We’re not judging: head to Darvaza for an Argentinian ribeye, Monster Sushi for uramaki, or La Balmesina for a sourdough pizza. To help you along your way, I’ll pop a few of my stand-out dishes below.
The one non-negotiable for me in any Market is trying a dish from a Michelin-starred restaurant – because, well, when else do you get to do that? Take my advice and try the creamy cuttlefish rice from Fran Lopez – it might just be the best dish you try in Barcelona.
The Galician octopus at Riaskru is a delight, perfectly fresh and tender and covered in this salty, citrussy, smokey blend of spices. You’ll probably never try Galician-Japanese fusion food again, so you’d be mad not to try this spot.
La Real rejects the smashburger trend entirely, serving up signature thick, juicy patties - and it didn’t disappoint. The ‘La Raclette’ was a stand-out, with rocket, house pickles, truffle mayo, caramelised onions and gooey raclette cheese.
Either come in a group, or come hungry. There’s a lot to try here. Or, for the best of both worlds, book onto the ‘Flavours of Barcelona by Time Out’ shore experience with P&O Cruises – it’s curated by us editors so you get to choose a little bit of (almost) everything – no food FOMO here.
